Natural Phenomena, Featuring: Michael Konrad
As an artist, I internalize scenes that dissolve into light, color, and flowing movement conveyed on canvas. Exposure to the beauty of landscapes provide inspiration for my oil paintings.
My goal as an artist is to evolve creatively and someday occupy space that is all my own by means of uniqueness and visual poetry.
I specialize in impressionistic landscape paintings that feature intense color, warm/cool lighting contrasts, and unprecedented vantage points.
If my paintings have a mission, it is to have an emotional impact on the viewer. My art subjects are trees, flora, mountains, and seascapes from extraordinary vantage points, with a focus on balancing shape, edge, value, and warm/cool relationships. I am drawn to vibrant colors and dynamic compositions that are representative with a tendency towards abstraction.
Painting is a solitary process, and I enjoy becoming lost in it. While painting, I listen to music, talk to myself, and talk to the painting if it's not cooperating. I begin my paintings with abstract shapes, working dark to light, rather than from a detailed sketch. I concentrate on painting the light, not the subject matter.
I prefer oil paints as they allow for flexibility and a wide range of colors and techniques to create rich color and depth. Working wet on wet is my first preference; however, glazing is also one of my favorite techniques.
